The Matilha Cultural project started in 2008, in a moment when a new São Paulo’s independent scene started to get mature and innovative enough to make a change. New forms of expressions that was brought up within the beginning of internet age paradigms, and also from urban/street manifestations, found at Matilha a place of experimentation and recognition.
Focused on contents related to the city streets, collective expression, awareness and what might be art some day, this cultural space used to have three work pilars: the Independent Culture development, Environmental Activism, and Animal Rights. Demetrio Portugal was one of the main responsible for its conceptualiztion, implantation and program management for its first four years. see more in “curatorship”.
It has shown annually an average of 12 art exhibition, and 27 educational programs. Hundreds of films used to be shown added up by the four biggest festivals from São Paulo and many other programs related to the new production from Brasil and the world. A space that attended directly around 20 thousand people per year
The projects conducted by Demetrio Portugal used contemporary group dynamic technics and design thinking as an easy visualization resource/tool, so the multi-background group was able to participate equally from the planing process, which latter became a formal master and business plan for the space.
